Moving and Shaking

Wow! It's been a whirlwind of a few weeks.

We found out our landlord wasn't renewing our lease, went on a vacation, found a new apartment, went to a Korean wedding, packed up our old apartment, moved into our new apartment, and finished the end of the school year - grading exams, packing up our classrooms, etc. And now? We leave for summer vacation in 3 short days! Time to pack again. And we're not even done unpacking! (Check out pictures from our adventures below!)

God has really blessed us during this busy season, and although there has been A LOT going on, we have really experienced his peace in the midst of it all.

Before we leave town, we have some goodbyes to say to friends who won't be coming back next year. We're not looking forward to that so much, but we are excited for them because we can see God leading them to new adventures.

On the other hand, we are really looking forward to this summer!
This year, we've booked a round the world ticket (If you haven't heard of this, it's really something to explore!).

We are planning to visit some wonderful cousins in Africa and England before a visit to the U.S. of A. First stop...Northern Africa for some quality time with Scott, Ashley, and baby Abraham. We can't wait to see them! Between Africa and England, we have a long layover in Paris, so we'll celebrate our 2nd anniversary together in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower (although our actual anniversary is a few days later). Next on the agenda, time with Matt, Vicki, and their sweet girls in Cambridge, followed by a week in London with...the whole Nat Pitcairn family + Grammy! We're excited to see some familiar faces in new places.

After all of our adventuring abroad, we'll make our way to Florida (June 30-July 8) and then to Illinois (July 8-July 28). Somewhere in there, we plan to sleep and eat, and Joy needs to do some homework for a college class of her own to renew her teaching certificate next summer.

So that's that! What are you up to this summer?

Love,
Joy and Bennett

To the Philippines and Back

Spring Break is winding down, and it's been a good one.

Arriving at the airport!
After finishing the quarter in rapid style, we jetted off to the Philippines on an evening flight that transitioned into a late night bus ride to the Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary in Baguio City (our home for the week). We arrived sometime around 3:30 and promptly fell asleep.

And so began a great week.

We spent Saturday in recovery and prep mode, planning for the week ahead, buying supplies, and prayer walking through a local park.

Breakfast at the seminary - a daily pleasure :)
Sunday was a full day at the Trinidad Baptist Church. We helped run Sunday School and performed a praise dance for the congregation. After the service, we enjoyed a nice time of food and fellowship with the church staff and teachers with whom we would be working through the week.

Monday morning...Back to Trinidad Baptist Church for our first day of VBS. The focus of our VBS was on God's word.

Performing our praise dance at Sunday service.  That girl
at far stage right is really cute
After VBS on Monday, we ate lunch with the church staff again (a regular part of the week), and we regrouped to go to Burnham Park for evangelism. The skies looked ominous, and a light fell as we arrived at the park. The light rain was soon replaced by a heavy downpour that showed no sign of letting up. After a wet time in the park, we brought a few shoe-fulls of water into a local Chinese restaurant where we tried to warm up and dry off a little bit...and ate delicious food!

Tuesday morning...VBS Day 2!

Our afternoon plans of visiting a local hospital fell through, and given the rainy weather, we decided to reorganize our schedule slightly. Instead of waiting to do a day at the mall on Thursday, we headed to the local mall on Tuesday afternoon. Our students had fun shopping and only got into minor trouble. Dried mangoes are a favorite souvenir for our students.
Parachute fun and games!  He wasn't
actually supposed to be in the middle,
but it made for a good picture.
Wednesday morning...Our third and final day of VBS!
Our group was feeling more tired all around, but still had a great day with the kids and church staff. After a full day of singing, dancing, tie-dying, game playing, picture taking, and lunch eating, we headed out again for a trip to a local orphanage.

This was probably the hardest part of our trip. Although our students were excited to work with the kids, the challenges in the orphan's lives were very apparent, and our group left with somewhat heavy hearts.

Wednesday night, we ate a delicious all-you-can-eat dinner at a Mongolian Barbeque restaurant before heading back for a bonfire back at the seminary, where we were joined by several of the teachers from the church. We had a good time of singing, reflection, and s'more-making. Joy ate about 10 marshmallows (They were delicious! How could I resist?).

rock band.
Thursday morning, we packed up our bags, checked out of our rooms, and headed back to Burnham Park to try for another day of evangelism. Although the morning started out bright and sunny, the rain caught up to us by the time we arrived at the park. Despite scattered showers, our group was still able to have some good conversations with people in the park. The skies also cleared enough for us to take a paddle boat ride around the lake.

The rain became more steady just in time for lunch, and our group got split up because there were not enough open taxis. The two of us and three students waited for hours looking for taxis, but thankfully, made it back to the seminary just in time to catch our 3:00 p.m. bus to the airport.

Tie-dyeing shirts teaches how God's
Word changes lives.
A long bus ride, a red-eye flight, and another bus ride later, we arrived safe and sound (and sleepy!) at our apartment in Korea.
We're relaxing this weekend, and both of us have been sick since getting back. We're thankful that this cold didn't catch up to us until we made it home.

As a whole, the highlight of our week was our nightly discussion of the book of John with our students. We really enjoy seeing how God is teaching them, and we are praying that they don't lose sight of him as they return to their "everyday" lives in Seoul. We also really enjoyed seeing our students work with the kids at the church during VBS and getting to know the teachers at the church. We're encouraged to hear about what God is doing there!
One of our paddle boats was defective, so the swan boat police
came to save the day!

Bennett also enjoyed getting to know a local Jeep-ny driver, Joel, who drove our group around for a few days of the trip.

Back to school tomorrow for the start of (can you believe it?!) the fourth quarter!

Time flies like an arrow, Fruit flies like a banana

Now that we've hooked you in with that Bennett-worthy pun, we'd like to give you a photo-update of the past several months. Think you can handle it? Here we go!

November: Date night at the lantern festival. Believe it or not,
these amazing displays are all giant paper lanterns!
This one reminds Joy of home.
November: An American Thanksgiving Dinner.
We had some friends join us for the works! Turkey, stuffing,
mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, and even some pumpkin
pie. No...we didn't make it all. The U.S. Army base has a restaurant that caters!
November: An American Thanksgiving.
"How do you carve a turkey?"
"I don't know...Let's Google it."
Thank you, Butterball.com!

First stop, Illinois!
We celebrated a Parkhurst Christmas this year.
After Christmas, we took a trip to sunny South Florida for New Years.
January: GWAM team fun
Our Spring Break missions team got together for some fun and fellowship.
Here, our fellow leader, Heidi, is trying to get her team to guess the word "Woof!"
Day 2 of our GWAM team fun included a day of skiing.
Joy stayed home sick, but Bennett represented the Parkhurst family.

The Matt Papa band came to YISS for the week.
February: Seoul Seekers
Our GWAM team ran a 5-week children's program in preparation
for our Spring Break missions trip to the Philippines.
We'll be leading a Vacation Bible School program there.
The theme for this year is God's word. God's word is comforting,
surprising, and life-changing.

February: Lunar New Year Potluck at the Way Church
We had a great time eating Korean food with our church friends.
We brought ziti. Not so Korean. ;)
February: Lunar New Year Potluck at the Way Church
Part of the fun involved a "getting-to-know-you" Bingo game.

Our friend Brad was nominated to demonstrate the hokey pokey.
That's what it's all about.
February: Lunar New Year Potluck at the Way Church
To decide who won a game, our Korean friends played another
game...This is kind of like a one-legged chicken fight.
Who can stay standing the longest?

March: Brunch
We had a fun time brunching with our friends from church.
March: Brunch
They were all surprised to see Bennett
cooking in the kitchen.

March: Brunch - aftermath
We forgot about the bacon! For 6 hours!
We were thankful that nothing caught on fire while we were at church...

March: A family from school hosted a dinner for the middle school and
high school teachers. What a treat!

March: The venue for the dinner had a beautiful view of the city!
However, it was too cold to stand outside to enjoy it for long...
March: At the dinner, a caricature artist
drew our picture.
Bennett is so strong! Joy has good balance...
If you made through all of that, you might be wondering, "What's next?"
Next Friday is the end of the 3rd quarter! It's also the day we leave for the Philippines with our GWAM team. (In case you'd like to know, "GWAM" stands for "Guardians with a Message.") We'll be in the Philippines for 6 days, leading a Vacation Bible School and ministering to people in the local parks and local hospital.

Well, that's all for now! We're off to cook some pancakes...

Love,
Ben and Joy

P.S. In case you didn't hear, we'll be in Korea for at least one more school year!
